Hendrickson Hangs On For Win At I-94 Raceway
By Jason Dale Searcy
SAUK CENTRE, MN (July 18, 2008) -Matt Hendrickson didn't panic when adversity struck while leading the Legend Car Feature during the first ever Eve Of Destruction at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre, MN. Hendrickson proved why he is the defending champion and current point leader by pulling out to a big lead early in the race, but halfway through the event, a vibration slowed his pace. Hendrickson was able to hold on during a wild three-way battle to the finish, when Jake Varnum and Beau Barry caught Hendrickson with just two laps remaining. Varnum drove down low on the track as Barry jumped to the high side, making it three-wide. Hendrickson ultimately held his ground in the center of the track and won for the third straight time at the I-94 Raceway. Barry came home second, while Varnum was left a disappointed third.
Former UCAR Champion Tom Gjerstad won the Just 4 Fun Feature. Josh Christy took home the trophy in the 4-Tracker division and Raceway Park regular Dave Auringer won the Short-Tracker vs. Pro-4 Truck challenge race.
The Eve of Destruction featured many crowd pleasing special event races to cap off the night. Kevin Rutten won the Minnesota Merge race when Joe Albritton missed the final obstacle just before crossing the finish line. Chris Snyder from ATS Auto won the Rollover Contest and totaled his S.U.V. with a six-point roll. Sauk Centre school teacher Tom Gjerstad showed he does have eyes in the back of his head as he won the Back-up race. Ryan Krupel in his polish-power car set a new track record of 85 feet in the Dukes Jump. Dustin Karl showed his road racing skills by winning the Left-Right-Left challenge.
The highlight of the night brought the large crowd to it's feet when Jim Bendzick and his 1500 horsepower monster truck Rolling Thunder jumped over four junk cars and then crushed them to bits.
Racing continues on Saturday July 26th at I-94 Raceway when the World Famous Hooters Girls will be signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. All five ASA divisions of cars will be racing a full show, plus there will be a Back-up race.

SAUK CENTRE, MN (July 12, 2008) -Lots of hard work finally paid-off for Tyler Sjoman as he captured his first career win in the ASA Super Late Model, Legacy Power Line Inc. Feature at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Starting on the pole, Sjoman quickly outran Joey Johnson for the lead. Sjoman slowly built an advantage, only to see it wiped-out, when debris on the track prompted a caution 10 laps into the 40 lap event. Sjoman handled things when the race resumed as Johnson soon had Nick Panitzke battling him hard for second. This allowed Sjoman to extend his lead once again. However, Panitzke was the driver on the move as he disposed of Johnson and then set his sights on Sjoman. In only a handful of laps, Panitzke was able to track down Sjoman and the race for the lead became a nose-to-tail battle at the front of the pack. With nine laps remaining, Panitzke ducked under Sjoman to take the lead at the line. Sjoman maintained his position in the high groove as he came storming back on the next lap to reclaim the lead. Panitzke stayed alongside and with four laps to go, he snatched the lead back. The lead would swap back and forth a few more times, before Sjoman finally took it for good with one lap remaining. Panitzke mounted a final challenge out of the last turn, but would come up just short as Sjoman pulled off the thrilling win.
Kevin Woeste made it back-to-back wins in the Modified Feature. Starting up front, Woeste appeared to be the early favorite, but Shawn Koranda took command of the race from the wave of the green flag. Woeste stayed alongside Koranda and took the lead briefly on lap four, before Koranda showed his strength as he resumed the spot at the head of the field. Woeste continued to run alongside Koranda and the door finally opened for him on lap 13, when he again took the lead. Koranda then had company as Joey Johnson pressured him hard for second. This allowed Woeste some breathing room as the raced rolled on to it's conclusion. Johnson took the spot with just a few laps remaining and managed to come within a car's length by the time the checkered flag flew for Woeste.
Dustin Karl is quickly becoming the "Mr. Excitement" of the I-94 Raceway as he celebrated the win in the Legacy Power Line Inc. Thunder Car Feature. Things started with a bang as Patrick Amelung and Jason Schroepfer got together on the opening lap. When the race took the green for the second time, Kyle Kirberger put his car into the lead. Karl stayed locked on his bumper and that persistency worked in his favor as he moved by Kirberger who experienced mechanical problems and then dropped from the race. Karl seized the moment as he quickly ran away from everyone in the final few laps to take his second career Thunder Car Feature win.
Matt Peterson out-dueled his toughest competitor, his dad, Dean Peterson in the UCAR Feature. A full-field of cars started the event as Marc Rosenow, back for the first time in several weeks after an earlier season crash, paced the field. Brandon Hartung and Dustin Karl got crossed up on lap one to bring out an early yellow. Rosenow again took the lead on the restart with Matt Peterson now running alongside. Rosenow's night would end on lap three as he broke something, slowed on the track and brought out another caution as he tried to get his wounded truck off the track. Matt Peterson held the lead when the action picked back up as Dean Peterson shadowed his every move. Many of the Just 4 Fun cars provided plenty of drama as the leaders sliced their way through the slower traffic. Kurt Peterson spun with seven laps remaining to bring out the third and final caution of the race . Matt held his ground when the race got going once again as Dean tried everything to pass his son, but couldn't as Matt went on to take the overall and Pro-4 Truck division win. Josh Christy, turned in a great run to win in the 4-Tracker division, while Tom Gjerstad continued his happy homecoming with the top spot in the Just 4 Fun division.
Next week, the I-94 Raceway will host it's first-ever Eve of Destruction on Friday July 18th. The night will feature Monster Truck "Rolling Thunder" in a car crushing event. UCARs and Legend Cars will be racing along with a Roll Over contest, the Dukes Jump, the Minnesota Merger race, Left-Right-Left Challenge, Backup Races and much more. Spectator gates open at 6:30 with the event set to begin at 7:30. For more information visit www.i94raceway.com.
As an American Speed Association sanctioned track, the I-94 Raceway is part of the "first ever" ASA Member Track National Championship.
